Impeachment against the Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake
The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has decided to seek a meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa to discuss the situation following the impeachment of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake.President of the BASL Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said,that the President will need to decide if he is going to remove the incumbent Chief Justice or not following the impeachment vote in parliament.
The President would take a final decision during the next few days and a new Chief Justice will be appointed on the 18th of this month,government news sources said.
Presidents Spokesperson Mohan Samaranayake speaking to local media has said that the President has no other option but to impeach the Chief Justice. The President has no provision through Constitution to appoint an independent committee to reconsider the impeachment, he has added.
