Jagmohan Dalmiya, the president of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), passed away at a BM Birla Hospital on Sunday evening following a massive cardiac arrest.
The veteran cricket administrator was admitted to the B.M. Birla Hospital on Thursday night. Doctors attending to Dalmiya said on Saturday morning that the BCCI chief was responding to medicines and was in a stable condition. But they said he would still be under constant monitoring.
He was admitted to B M Birla Hospital on Thursday night after which he also underwent a coronary angiography. "Jagmohan Dalmiya suffered a massive gastrointestinal tract hemorrhage. Despite all the efforts of doctors, he succumbed to the bleeding at around 8.45pm," said Dr Anil Mishra of BM Birla Hospital.

Mr. Dalmiya was born into a Marwari Bania family based in Kolkata. He studied at the Scottish Church College, Calcutta.He played for cricket clubs as a wicketkeeper. Later he joined his father's firm ML Dalmiya and Co. and made it into one of India's top construction firms. His firm constructed Calcutta's Birla Planetarium in 1963.
He joined the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) in 1979, and became its treasurer in 1983. He had been elected the President of BCCI on numerous occasions. In 1996 he received 23 votes in an election for Chairman of the International Cricket Council, but failed to attain the two-thirds majority necessary under the ICC Constitution. However, in 1997 he was unanimously elected President of the ICC, which office he held for three years.
