Sri Lanka’s second international airport

Mattala International Airport in Hambantota was declared open by President Mahinda Rajapaksa a short while ago with The special SriLankan airlines flight carrying President Rajapaksa landed at the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport.

Constructed with Chinese aid using local engineering knowledge, 209 million U.S dollars have been invested in the project. Built across 800 hectares of land, for the first phase of the airport Mattala boasts of a 3500 metre-long, 75 meter wide runway, built to accommodate the world’s largest aircraft, the airbus A380 comfortably.

The Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, which can accommodate 10 aircraft at any given time, also has the tallest air traffic control tower in the country. International flights are scheduled to arrive at the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport from today onwards.
