Every year 52,000 healthy lives are lost due to these soft drinks.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has made on a special request of Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, to increase taxes on soft drinks based on the sugar content. According to the proposal, several alternative taxation policies have been introduced.
WHO resident Representative Dr. Razia Pendse has handed over the proposal to the Minister of Health recently at the Ministry.
According to Minister of Health Diabetes is spreading among adults and children and 10% of the population has diabetes. It is said that every year 52,000 healthy lives are lost due to these soft drinks.
Consumption of these drinks waste Rs 28 billion a year. Marketing and advertising has resulted in an increase in the consumption of such drinks. Consumption of soft drinks has also increased because of marketing and advertising and annually Rs. 28 billion is spent on soft drinks.
This proposal would present it to the cabinet in the future for approval.
