The Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya announced,The elections for the Western and Southern provincial Councils in Sri Lanka will be held on March 29 and Nominations for the Western and Southern Provincial Councils were accepted from January 30 to February 6.
The Election Commissioner allowed parties one hour after the nomination deadline to file objections.
Main political parties submitted nominations to all the districts in the two provinces. 

18 political parties and 15 independence groups handed over nominations for the Colombo district. However, nominations of 4 independence groups were rejected.

14 political parties and 10 independence groups have handed over nominations for the Kalutara district.  The District Election Secretariat stated that the nominations of Akila Ilangai Peoples Congress and one of the independence groups have been rejected.

The nominations given by all 13 registered political parties and 9 independence groups for the Gampaha district have been accepted.

450 candidates from 14 political parties and 4 independence groups have given nominations for the Galle district. Among them, 22 members will be elected to represent the district in the Southern Provincial council.

380 candidates from 14 political parties and 5 independence groups will contest from the Matara district and 17 members will be elected to represent the district in the Southern Provincial Council.
221 candidates from 9 political parties and 4 independence groups have handed over nominations for the Hambantota district. 14 members among them will be elected to the Southern Provincial Council.



No nomination has been rejected from the districts of Galle, Matara or Hambantota.
