| Import tax increased on big onions |
The import tax on a kilo of big onions has been increased by Rs.20 from yesterday, the ministry said today. The levy had been increased to Rs. 30 from its previous amount Rs. 10.
Local Onion farmers in Dambulla area were pointed out that the traders in Dambulla Economic Centre are rejecting their products and priority given to buy lower-priced imported big onions. They urged the government to impose a special commodity levy on imported big onions, otherwise they would have to commit suicide.
