Sri Lanka to make sports compulsory in school
Sri Lanka's Ministry of Sports said, that sports will be made compulsory for the school students from next year 2014.
Accordingly, every student is asked to engage at least in one sport, the Ministry of Sports says.
A recent research done by the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health has shown that Sri Lankan school children have become increasingly vulnerable to diabetes and other physical ailments due to inactivity.

However, a union leader, Ceylon Teachers' Union secretary Joseph Stalin Fernando said that many schools lack sports facilities and the severe competition for limited opportunities lead the students to alienate themselves from sports.
He demanded the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Sports to provide facilities for sports in schools.
