| Sri Lanka's Southern Expressway extends; Galle – Matara stretch opens today |
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse will declare open the second phase of the southern expressway from Galle to Matara today.the Ministry of Highways, Ports and Shipping announced.
The extension has two interchanges along the 35 kilometer distance between Galle and Matara.There will be two inter changes on the highway. The inter change at Imaduwa in Galle will enable the public to enter the Galle-Akuressa road. The Kokmaduwa inter change will be linked with an approach route the Weligama-Kananke road. The new set up will help the public to travel from Kottawa to Matara within one hour and 20 minutes. Earlier, four hours were spent to cover the distance.
The four-lane extension was constructed at a cost of US$ 180 million with the funds from EXIM Bank of China.
